Your Place in Time
installation, (human hair, magnifying glass,
tape deck, lamp, 10 miles of continuous
audio tape, helium balloons)

A human hair lies illuminated and magnified against a section of audio tape, the hair visible through a magnifying glass.
The tape is moving slowly, very slowly through the tape deck. Using the hair as a reference point the tape is moving one millimetre every 700 years.
Each side of the deck the tape is seen to be continuous with a lot of tape.
The length of tape represents the estimated life of the solar system on the same scale as the human hair, with the tape taking 700 years to move one millimetre.
The finished piece seen at an exhibition and in the studio.

The middle of the road is truly a liminal space, a 'no go' area for all except the cat's eyes.
These cat's eyes are in their original state, well not quite.
The rubber cat's eye in front of the metal ones here was used as a model for a series of plaster ones.
The plaster ones form a colony who are protesting.
The cats eyes are seen in a low light, with a video of a night time road scene forming the backdrop. There is chaos, but freedom, as the cat's eyes protest and leave their station.
I haven't got into blogging yet but now hope to do so thanks you Jean. There is some fantastic stuff here which is intriguing and visually attractive and shows radical new directions in what you are doing. Seems a far cry from the paintings you were doing - I'm a fairly old fashioned painter and don't claim to understand much about the new stuff. My roots are in the arts and humanities and yours in science - I think this shows in the directions you have taken but I can still discern common ground. Perhaps we need to meet and talk art instead of bikes and grandchildren!
ReplyDeleteJean I have found your blog, it is great and so interesting to see the work you have been doing while I was on my 'time out' such a great range of imagery showing your background. I really must make my blog a bit more interesting!
